From the outside, it may not look like much but step inside the gate and have your initial thoughts transformed. Casa Toucan is small oasis in Puerto Morelos. Located near the town square, the malecon and great restaurants, you will not find a better property to sit down your luggage. Beautiful lush gardens, sparkling dipping pool and the view you visited the Riviera Maya for. The beach is just outside the gate of the property: flat, wide, white sand await you. Never too crowded and a leisurely pace it is the beach solitude you have been craving. There are three units to choose from and each offers what you're looking for: comfort, the ocean and tranquility. Jon the owner and our host, is welcoming and easy going. For the money, you will not find a better value in Puerto Morelos.

My mother and I stayed in Casa Toucan 1 for four nights. The layout was great for us with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The bathrooms were newly renovated and very nice. The beds were comfortable and each bedroom had more than enough built-in storage space for all of our belongings. The AC did a good job cooling down the bedrooms at night.
It was really nice to be so close to the town square - it is about half a block away. There are lots of good restaurants very close by. We enjoyed dips in the small pool and hanging out in the ocean. We were the only guests at Casa Toucan during our stay so we had our pick of beach loungers and mostly lounged by the pool. Most days someone would come to rake the seagrass from the beach.
Jon, the owner, lives on the top floor of the complex and was very hospitable. We always felt safe during our visit and would definitely come back to Casa Toucan for another stay.

2nd stay here in the last 6 months. This place is awesome!! Love Casa Toucan and this unit. Location is perfect, walking distance to everything. Unit is super nice with a million dollar view, mere steps to the beach , great breeze coming into unit from porch and if needed brand new ac. If staying in for the night great movie selection on tv , nice little pool that is awesome to lounge in and relax. Lots of eateries steps away lots of shopping steps away , small supermarket & drugstore across street , atms and cambio across street. Just about perfect for us. John the owner is a wonderful host and great guy. Would and will stay again.

We recently enjoyed a 10 day stay at Casa Toucan in Puerto Morelos and were very impressed from check in to check out. We were lucky enough to stay in #2 and were just blown away from the second we walked in! The first WOW was the ocean view from the living room and deck, it literally took our breath away. Every single day of our stay we found ourselves commenting on the ocean view, it's that amazing. The unit it's self is newly remodeled and is incredible. Beautiful interior, very spacious, well thought out in design and comfortable to say the least. Comfy bed, if you need a/c , brand new unit in bedroom which we only turned on 3 times in 10 days. Breeze from front room is absolutely incredible. Nice small kitchen, and very nice bathroom, walk in shower.
Location as mentioned in other reviews is awesome! Steps from ocean, steps from town square and many quaint little eateries. Just awesome.
This is a small property, with a wonderful owner who is very helpful and friendly and allows you great privacy but is there when you need him. Property is also very private, which is nice. Small little pool and small nice little garden area with a couple of faithful iguanas who seem to be constantly posing for a picture or two.
Overall just a wonderful fit for us and absolutely would and will stay again.

This is the second time we have stayed in Unit 1, and we are very happy we did. Unit 1 has had lovely renovations to the bathrooms, and a kitchen remodel is planned for later this year. Can't wait to go back and see it! The grounds are lovely, and the new additions to two other units have only made the whole space more gracious. Jon and Alicia are, as we had come to expect, such delightful hosts of the property. A word about a previous review - any difficulties from the new plumbing (and they were only occasional and mild) will be soon fixed - Jon is very proud of their property and really keeps on top of things. April weather was great, as March had been last year in Any time us a good time to be in PM at Casa Toucan.

We spent two weeks in the Yucatan, mostly away from the madding crowd but wanted to spend the last couple of nights on the Caribbean overlooking the ocean. This small condo unit complex was the perfect answer: clean, large, ocean view, walk out the door to the pool and steps away from the ocean and the restaurants in the downtown.

My wife and I stayed at this exceptional property for 2 weeks in Feb. This was our second time visiting Casa Toucan. We have stayed in 2 of the 4 units on the property. I take exception to some points in the previous review and wish to relate our experience. First of all the owner supplies complete, detailed and accurate information about the area, property including rules and regulations. Absolutely no surprises! Read them. Shared outdoor common area works great, only 3 other couples at most and plenty of space, chairs, tables and room in the pool / hot tub. We have found that the owners being on site is a MAJOR positive in our holiday. If you need something fixed, adjusted, advice, directions or just an opinion on where to find a great breakfast, they are always available. It's like having the ultimate concierge service; accommodating, friendly and discreet. We have met many other couples during our times at Casa Toucan whom express the same opinion. Check out next winters availability calendar, booking up quickly with return guests. I'm one of them.

And had a massage person come to us!!! Outside on the courtyard. I will definitely be back and recommend to all my friends!

The location of this spot is heaven. Right on the beach, with beautiful sunrises every day directly off the balcony. Walking a very short stroll to from shore snorkeling, swimming, boats to the reef, the town square, and fabulous restaurants. You can hear the Mexican music from the beach bar just down the beach as you sit on your own balcony and enjoy your drinks and snacks. It is not too loud or intrusive. Great pool. Spots to sit in the sun or shade around the pool.
Casa Toucan was just remodeled, and it is just beautiful now. A large balcony, great bathroom, bedroom and kitchen. Large living/dining room. Everything is first class. We were the first to rent since the apartment was remodeled. In fact, they were finishing it as we arrived.
The whole complex was undergoing some renovations that are probably finished by now. It looks even better than before. Because of the renovations, there was some construction disruption, but Jon and Alice did all they could to make things better for us. I would not hesitate to stay there again. In fact, we are trying to pick dates for next year. Highly recommended.

We are repeat customers of Casa Toucan and stay in January and March. This property is located on the beautiful pristine beach of Puerto Morelos just one half block from city center. There are Restaurants just a few steps from the front door.
Property is well maintained with great English speaking owners. Property boasts a nice pool and a hot tub in back of pool for use on cool nights. There are comfortable chaise chairs for your enjoyment of the wonderful sunshine. Property is just steps away from the sea and you can watch the cruise ships sashaying their way to Cozemel or back to Miami.
The site has great safes which are the largest we have enjoyed in Mexico.
Each unit has a fully equipped kitchen with a gas stove and an oven. Safe sanitary water is provided at no extra charge. Maid service is provided weekly!
Owners are very responsive to your needs and have a wealth of information on the area.
We can't wait for our next stay at Casa Toucan and to enjoy the friendliness and safety of Puerto Morelos.

We stayed at Casa Toucan 1 for three weeks in March, and could not have been more pleased. Jon and Alicia, the hosts, live on site and are a gracious and willing presence. It feels as if you have been welcomed into their special paradise. One day, Jon even insisted on driving my husband to the doctor when he had a minor medical need. The apartment is spacious, well equipped and clean. What a treat to wake up each day to a view of the ocean, and to be overlooking the lovely pool and landscaped patio area. All the guests of the three apartments, we were 6 at the time, share this area, and it was especially nice to meet other folks, but never find it crowded or congested. The bed is very comfortable, there's space to read or hang out, the wifi works, and there's on demand shows - which we never even used. The kitchen is equipped with basic cooking utensils, and Jon was quick to supply a certain pan we needed but didn't have. It's a quiet place, meant for relaxation, yet you are just out the door and either across the street or around the corner to a great variety of restaurants and town activities.

My husband and I spent a glorious two weeks at Casa Toucan #1. The apartment is spacious and the grounds are lovely and well cared for. You can watch the sunrise and the sea right from the apartment. When we were in Puerto Morelos previously, our apartment was a few blocks from the beach. This time the view and the sea breeze added a whole new dimension and we could leave without our shoes to walk along the beach. Jon and Alicia, the owners, live on the property. They are very helpful and are readily available if needed. There is a sense of security knowing that they are on the premises. Jon will also provide you with a very detailed information package before you arrive.
We loved our apartment. The king bed is excellent and there are comfortable chairs and sofa in the living room. We prepared two meals each day in our kitchen and had everything we needed.
Casa Toucan is less than a block away from the town square which is very convenient. You are a few minutes walk to restaurants, shops, the grocery store, and the town pier.
When we return to Puerto Morelos we will definitely want to be at Casa Toucan.

My wife and I loved our time at Casa Toucan. The property is right on the beach, and in our upstairs room we had a splendid panoramic view out over the water. The location is ideal; it was a short, easy walk to good places on the town square for breakfast and dinner. Jon and Alicia are thoughtful but unobtrusive hosts, and they know the community well enough to advise you on arrangements for whatever you want to do in Puerto Morelos (snorkeling, diving, etc.). If you're looking for a restful several days, Casa Toucan is a great choice.

Over the past 10 years my wife and I have stayed at numerous condos and hotels in PM and hands down this is our favorite. In fact it is our favorite place to stay in all of the Riviera Maya. Location can't be beat, just one block from the town square and 40 steps from our favorite restaurant ( El Pesquero). The hosts are fabulous, leaving you to yourselves most of the time, but readily available if you need help or have any questions. We have stayed in both #2 and #3, both were awesome and we can't wait to return.

Casa Toucan is the perfect location - close to everything you could want. The pool was very refreshing on some of the hot & humid days and couldn't get much closer to the ocean. My husband and I spent many hours with our arms over the ledge staring out at the water - only about 20 feet away! We stayed in Unit 2 with the personal balcony & washer/dryer. AC in the bedroom works well & quickly. Most places in town shut down pretty early at night so we browsed Jon & Alicia's extensive movie, TV show & music collection.
Owners Jon & Alicia go above and beyond to help make your trip as wonderful as possible. After booking, Jon emailed a welcome packet with all the information about their place and about the town. He is very thorough and great with communication. From recommending places to eat, activities and even setting us up with a personal tour guide to the local ruins, Jon & Alicia couldn't have been more accommodating. If interested in any tours, cenotes, ruins, etc, I highly recommend Jon's friend, Paco (but he called himself Francisco Cuevas Garcia). He was our personal driver for the day and knew the history of the entire area and was hilarious.
Puerto Morelos itself is a quaint little fishing town with tons of cafes, beautiful scenery and wonderful people. We really enjoyed our trip during the low season because this small town felt even more inviting and intimate with fewer tourists. The only thing that we didn't enjoy about our stay was the stretch of seaweed when you enter the ocean. Apparently there's been a recent influx, but hopefully that will be cleared up soon.
My husband, who isn't exactly big on traveling, is already talking about going back. Casa Toucan is a great place to stay.

My husband and I just returned from an amazing week in Puerto Morelos, This was our second visit to this area, the first time being 4 years ago when we stayed at a nearby all-inclusive resort. During that vacation, we spent more time off-resort and in Puerto Morelos, and fell in love with the area, so decided we would much rather stay in town on this trip.
We booked with Casa Toucan based on reviews, and were not disappointed in the least, In fact, it was more than we could have hoped for, The location is spectacular! We stayed in Casa Toucan 3 (studio apartment) as well as Casa Toucan 2 (one-bedroom) apartment, and both were great, having everything we needed for comfort, convenience and privacy. It also allowed us to do some of our own cooking which we had very much hoped to (and did) do with local ingredients.
As a previous reviewers noted, the information package provided after booking was very extensive and covered pretty much anything we could or would ask, from information on the property, access, rules, amenities, to which restaurants and activities there are in the area. (I highly recommend the walking tour of La Colonia which gives great insight into the local area and its residents, as well as some places to get wonderful fresh food such as produce, tortillas, meats, juices and of course, fabulous tacos) And if there was something we wanted to know that was not in the package, Jon was very willing to help us out.
The location is second to none, being walking distance to pretty much anything we needed. The pool was a perfect size for us to relax by and in, and is literally steps from the beach. The views are incredible, at any time of day and any type of weather (we had sun and rain).
Sharing the "public" spaces with other visitors and the owners was not an issue for us. Everyone was very respectful of each others' privacy, and interactions happened easily if people showed interest. I never felt imposed on in any way. Another review mentioned the cats onsite. At the time of our stay, there were 4 cats, all pretty independent and not pests at all. Two of them barely gave us the time of day, and the other two were more friendly - probably due in large part to us paying them a lot of attention. If we kept the doors and screens closed, they did not bother us in any way, although we were quite happy to have them visit.
We also want to say a special thank you to Jon and Alicia for accommodating an extra night when we made a change in our plans. They did so with zero fuss!
Thank you!

Jon & Alicia and their maintenance lady keep this lovely property private, spotless, and perfect for their guests. The two-bedroom Casa Toucan 1 unit has a spacious open-plan multi-fan-cooled living room/kitchen/dining area looking through an almost-all-glass east wall that guarantees a nonstop ocean view. The bedrooms and bathrooms are roomy and nicely set up with ample storage and comfortable big beds. Bedrooms have both fans and air conditioning with good overhead and lamp lighting.
The unit offers more than enough standard electrical outlets for all your charging and other user needs, along with large flatscreen TV [in-house movies only, but lots of choices] and a nice small ipod/radio stereo. Furnishing is comfortable and plentiful: sofas, large easychairs, many dining chairs.
I've only noted the kitchen as "GOOD" rather than "GREAT" to make you aware that -- with big modern fridge, microwave and coffeemaker -- it's set up more for occasional or light meals than for full cooking and steady in-house dining. IT is a GREAT convenience kitchen!
The smallish but spotless pool is beautifully designed and set withing the lovely landscaping and walkways, and is absolutely adequate for a dip and work-out -- after all, Casa Toucan's private gate onto the immediately adjacent and gorgeous beach is 4 steps from the pool and only a few feet from the various seating/chaise-lounging arrangements nicely spotted around the very spacious and beautifully landscaped deck.
While you share the deck with Casa Toucan's 2 other guest units, in combination with the upstairs one-bedroom unit's deck you and your fellow guests have all the privacy you could want -- you never feel crowded or intruded upon. Entry from dining area to patio is level.
However, due to the street level, beach level, and parcel size, the various steps from street to patio [c. 7] and patio to beach [c.5] cannot reasonably be made accessible -- as a landscape architect, I regret that ADA-accessibility would likely require installation of multiple lifts for which there probably is just not enough room. Sorry!
While Jon & Alicia's welcoming verbal presentation of their expectations of guests is quite thorough, you quickly come to appreciate how much effort they put into making your experience a peaceful, luxurious and completely enjoyable stay. They care a LOT that you should really like Casa Toucan and gorgeous, tiny, quiet central Puerto Morelos and the surrounding state of Quintana Roo and Yucatan Peninsula.
Jon & Alicia are a gracious but background presence, never intruding on your stay while keeping the place running perfectly. Their 3 cats also stay in the background, tho' the gorgeous Siamese female may slowly conclude that you are ok [after several classy displays of hesitation].
While there is a neighbouring home to the south, the empty lot to the north not only is unlikely to be developed per that owner's vision but also provides a wider view to Casa Toucan guests than you might expect from a beachfront residential site. To the north you can see the open covered deck of palapa-roofed [thatch -- a typical Pueblo Morelos roof] ]El Merkadito Restaurant and Bar [good burgers!], it is far enough away to add to the scenic pueblo feel rather than being noisy or feeling intrusive.
Your hosts are glad to recommend places to dine from among the 10 or so Mexican, Greek, Uruguayan, burger, pizza and view lounges within a five-minute stroll of Casa Toucan -- most of them located around the spacious central town plaza with its own good ocean/beach view. They also have recommendations for pedicures, massages, tour guides, boat guides -- you name it.
It's just remarkable to find such a peaceful, quiet, private gem of a residence 1/4 block off any town's center! And Puerto Morales matches Casa Toucan for peaceful relaxation while being very close to a marvelous lively reef and within easy daytrip distance of multiple Mayan national parks, untrammeled villages, and the "selva" [low jungle] itself.
Enjoy Casa Toucan -- we will happily return there over the years!

It's almost impossible to describe how fabulous Casa Toucan is. It is literally right on the beach. We spent every morning sitting on the pool deck with our coffee, watching the pelicans die for fish. It was beautiful. All the comforts of home were inside. Comfy beds, fully stocked kitchen, plenty of space to spread out, even the water pressure was impressive. You don't have to sacrifice anything to spend time in this paradise. We got a welcome packet before we came to stay, with more information in it than I could've even thought to ask. We were very grateful for that. And any questions that we had, John the owner was happy to answer. We were a little nervous about being in Mexico and not on an Americanized resort, but this was by far the better option. I have never had a vacation as amazing as this one.I cannot wait to get back here. My husband and I are literally already planning our next trip. If you are at all considering Casa Toucan, book it. You will not be sorry.

Within a hour of being there, I was already dreading the fact that I was going to have to leave. I not so secretly wished that my flight would be canceled and I would be forced to stay a few more days. If you're looking for a mega-touristy resort, this is not the place for you. However, if you want feel of stepping out of the front door to your own home into a little piece of paradise, this is absolutely the place for you. You are still just a 20 minute trip from Cancun or Playa if you want to make a day trip. There are three "apartments" on the property, but it's laid out so that everyone has their own personal space. You can step through the back gate and directly onto the beach with the ocean about 15 yards away. It's private and peaceful, yet less than half a block from the town square with many shops and restaurants available. Great place. I can't wait to get back.

We (2 couples) stayed in Casa Toucan 1 for only a couple of nights but wished we could've stayed longer. The location of the unit was fantastic! Easy to walk to the grocery store and the many restaurants and cafes in Puerto Morelos. Quick taxi ride to the ADO terminal. The house was perfect size and had everything we needed: kitchen, WiFi, beach access, music/movies for downtime or rainy days, pool/hot tub. Jon the owner was very friendly and helpful. Definitely the perfect spot to stay in Puerto Morelos!

First of all Puerto Morales is a great town for a fun hangout. The location of Casa Toucan is perfect if you want to walk around the city and eat at great restaurants. The property is about 60 yard from the square by road and 60 yards to the docks by sand where you can hop on a boat for snorkeling or fishing. We went in the morning and it was easy for us to get a private boat for the two of us. The property is on the water, with palm trees you can lay under for shade once the sun begins to go down. You can either get in the ocean right in front of the property or you can walk about 100 yards down the beach to a buoyed off area in case the fishing boats are busy coming in and out of the area. We stayed in the downstairs portion of the property and it was great, about 20 steps to the ocean and 10 steps up to the city. Great facilities, big kitchen (which we did not use because every restaurant we went to was amazing), and plenty of room, A/C and a place to hook up our ipods which really came in handy. The owners do live on the property and are attentive and nice. They gave us great rec's on who to talk to for snorkeling and suggestions on food and drink. The beach was always clean and ready for a towel to put down. There is a great pool but we didn't really hit that because the ocean was too inviting and convenient.

Casa Toucan is in our opinion the best place to stay while in Puerto Morelos! It is a prime location, right on the beach, close to the town square and all shopping and restaurants. Casa Toucan 1 was a fully functional unit, comfortable, makes you feel right at home. The property is small and certainly makes you feel like it's your own. The units are clean and well cared for. The grounds are beautiful and the views stunning. The owner is on-site, but not intrusive in the least. Although always there to answer any questions or assist in any way. This property was the perfect choice for our family, being our first time in Puerto Morelos, and has convinced us to return time and again...right to Casa Toucan! The town itself is comfortable, affordable, peaceful ... a real gem. In our opinion, this is the place to stay to enjoy this wonderful town..you will fall in love with Casa Toucan and Puerto Morelos.

Hard to beat combination of location and hosts.
Communication with Jon could not have been better from initial inquiry, to booking, and to information prior to arrival. Even on the morning of arrival, Jon and Alicia were going to be out fishing and I received and email as well as a note on the door welcoming us to make ourselves at home if they were not back before we arrived. The "gone fishing" note really describes the laid back feel of not only the owners and their property, but the whole town. That set the tone for the week. The property is as described and lives up to the pictures. Jon was quick to respond to any questions or needs, and although the owners are on site they never gave us the feeling that we being "watched over" or intruding. We felt very welcomed and on our own at all times but with the confidence that should we need something we just had to ask. Right out the door are several great spots to eat, and groceries are just around the corner about 1 minute walk. Being on the beach...what more need I say. :)
I can recommend this property without hesitation.

Even 4 days of rain and drizzle could not deter this hardy band of Pennsylvanians from enjoying their stay at Casa Toucan. While the polar vortex had the locals and expats wearing jackets, we were in the pool. Our accommodations (Toucan 1) were clean and spacious. We really enjoyed the huge collection of movies when the rain got to be a bit much. The aC units in the bedrooms worked great. We only have a few suggestions. We are early risers and it would have be nice if the pool and/or hot tub was opened a bit earlier in the day. The area outside of our unit is a common area so we did our best not to clutter it with towels, but it would be great if there was a line or some hooks to hang wet towels on rather than strewing them in our unit in an attempt to get them to dry. The coffee maker is probably ready to be replaced soon, also. Those are all minor things. the beds were very comfortable. The owners, other guests and assorted neighbors are all super friendly. Puerto Morelos is such a laid back town. It only took us about 3 minutes to acclimate to the mood. It's full of great restaurants with a quality of food that belies the low key appearance of the town. We did not have one bad meal! The location is phenomenal - if you walk 100 ft in any direction (not into the ocean, of course!) you run into a great restaurant. We can't wait to come back!

We spent one week in the little casita - and enjoyed our 1st visit to Puerto Morelos immensely. Casa Toucan is right on the beach - but manages to stay very private & quiet at the same time. Loved hearing the wind & the waves every evening - quiet beachfront walks in the early morning too while awaiting the gorgous sunrises! Plus - the back gated entrance takes you right to town - by the town square - lots of great little restaurants!!! Just a Perfect location!!

This is a great chilled holiday and you right in the centre, but still quiet. The owners are great are go out their way to help you.,but what could you need ? It is all at your doorstep.

My 17 year old daughter and I stayed for a second time at Casa Toucan. I think this is the first time I've ever returned to a property. When it comes to returning to the Cancun area, there is no need to look further. Never shlep your stuff to the beach again, stay on the beach instead!
We take the small unit 3, it can be seen in the pictures in the lower right. It has a kitchenette, very functional, and if you're missing a utensil or pot Jon is right on the spot to get you what you need. The bathroom is very small but tidy. The rest of the space is taken by the bed, a queen. The bed faces the door, overlooking the patio, wall and then ocean. When the bed was moved to face the door, we lost the wall to prop ourselves up against. With no other furniture, we spent leisure time, like watching a movie at night, on the bed. This was fine with us, but might not be everyone's cup of tea.
Upon arrival we like to walk to the market and stock up on groceries for the week. We recommend walking beach side, it's a short walk to the square, street side is not as pleasant.
Casa Toucan's owners are very attentive, very detailed oriented. The best addition to the Casa from 2 years ago, was the Voice over IP phone for free us dialing. It's also worth a mention that the wi-fi is reliable.
I urge you to skip the tours being peddled next to the general store, instead grab a taxi yourself and go direct. Or use the people Jon recommends.
If you like to get away from the crowds of Cancun, you don't mind taking care of your own needs,in exchange for a clean, friendly affordable place right on the beach, Casa Toucan could be just right for you.

We discovered Puerto Morelos last year and vowed to come back. What we discovered this year is a perfect vacation home, Casa Toucan. Casa Toucan is a small, family complex made up of 3-4 units right on the beach less than half a block from the lovely town square. We stayed in the one bedroom unit on the second floor. Our unit had a large open living-dining-kitchen area and an outside veranda that faces the Caribbean, a bedroom, bathroom and another balcony that faces away from the water. We spent most of our time on the veranda with it’s constant breezes and the most amazing views of the Caribbean, the pool, the beach and the town's famous leaning light house. The pool is intimate and invites more relaxation and lounging. You can get a meal, drink or massage by walking on the beach for a few minutes or you can walk the other way for a minute and get to the relaxed center of town with all of its shops, restaurants, activities and friendly, friendly people. The owners, John and alicia were there getting ready for the season and their company and suggestions only enhanced the experience. They are friendly and helpful. Our stay was so enjoyable that we booked for next year before we left. We are sure that once you discover Casa Toucan it will become your “home” in Puerto Morelos.

I booked this place after reading the reviews on Trip Advisor. I stayed at Casa Toucan for 8 nights. I was coming to Puerto Morejelos to get my dive certification at Wet Set Diving. I have stayed at 8 or so places along this coastline in the last 10 years. Everything from tiny cabanas to 5 star hotels. This by far is my favorite place and I can't wait to come back and bring my family. Even though I had travelled to this part of Mexico alone before, I was a little apprehensive as it had been 10 years since I had been to P.M. I had John and Alicia pick me up at the airport. They are so nice and I felt all the worries I had melt away. By the time we arrived at Casa Toucan I felt like they were old friends. The apartment I rented was the one bedroom on the upper level. It looked exactly like the pictures only better because I was standing in it. I loved the openness of the space. It is very light and airy. The dining room, kitchen, and living room is one big space. It just feels good. The bedroom is large as well, and I thought the bed was very comfortable. The best part was waking up in the morning and looking at the beautiful view from those huge windows. While I made my coffee I looked out onto a tastefully done rock wall with two iguanas lazing on it. I had coffee on the covered veranda. [pinch myself!] All of the grounds, gardens and pool is tastefully done. It is a very peaceful setting. I was able to get internet access. Best of all as a solo traveler I felt completly safe at this place. The gates and door locks work really well. Casa Toucan is located within walking distance to everything a person could need. Some places advertise this, when it is really a mile to town. When you walk out the main gate you are about a block to town square. If you walk north about a block you will find yourself at a beachfront reastuaraunt with sand floors that serves the best whole fried fish I have ever eaten. I can't remember the name but it's not hard to find. I love the beaches along this part of the coast, the water was very calm. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed my stay at Casa Toucan. John and Alicia are great hosts and go out of their way to make sure you are enjoying your stay. I was sad to say good bye and look forward to returning.

Prior to this trip, we had only done all-inclusive trips to the area. This one was probably the most relaxing thus far. We also became much more immersed in the town and spent enough time to actually get to know some of the locals.
The proximity of this property to the store, town square, main dock/pier etc. is just about perfect. It is only about 4 doors away from all the above.
We stayed in Toucan 2 (the upstairs 1 bedroom) and had an incredible view of the pool below and the beach/Caribbean sea from our porch/deck. In addition, while at times quite warm, we had a constant breeze blowing through the apartment. There are plenty of screened windows/doors that can be opened for ventilation. There was only one day that got warm enough that we thought we would have to turn on the A/C that night to sleep, and by the time the sun set, it cooled off nicely enough that it was not necessary. The A/C was never turned on the week we were there even during the day, because if we got hot, we just jumped in the pool to cool off.
I thought about mentioning that the mattress was a bit uncomfortable, but then I realized that any time we sleep in a hotel, motel, resort, family or friend's house or essentially ANYWHERE ELSE but home and our own bed, the bed is uncomfortable for the first few nights. As anywhere, we did get used to it and slept great the last several nights of the trip.
The one possible downside to Toucan 2 or 4 is if you have any mobility issues you may want to book Toucan 1 or 3 which are at ground/pool level, as the stairs to the pool area from 2 or 4 are a bit steep. However, the access from the street is fine with a few easy stairs and if you don't use the pool or beach it wouldn't be an issue.
Toucan 2 includes all the appliances, utensils, plates/ bowls and cups you need to prepare meals. The store (Casa Martin) is just around the corner and has most of what you need for the same.
An MP3/CD player is provided, as well as some nice music on CD's (at least to us), but it is not a docking type player so you will have to bring a 3mm audio cable if you bring an Ipod/ mp3 device.
WiFi is also provided as well as a Vonage Voip phone with a US phone # so calls to and from the US cost nothing. That came in very handy when I lost an ATM card and had to call to cancel it.
Now here is the best part of our stay at Casa Toucan.
Jon and Alicia, who are the new owners, unfortunately had to leave for a family emergency just before we arrived, and didn't make it back before we left. However, my wife and I felt more hospitality from them via trip advisor messages , than we normally experience when face to face with most people in the service industry. We (again, unfortunately) have never met them, but feel that we know them enough to say that if you book a stay at Casa Toucan, they will do absolutely anything they can to make you feel at home and appreciated for you business.
Thanks Jon and Alicia for your part in making our vacation as good as it was!

This place was awesome, from the helpful Catriona when booking to Jin who graciously picked us up at the airport to the owner who was there throughout our stay. While not fancy, it is certainly comfortable, clean and well-maintained, and in such a great location, we couldn't have asked for more. The owner was more than accommodating and quite helpful in assisting us with lining up a snorkel trip and recommending some great restaurants. You are a half a block from the town square and easy walking distance to lots of restaurants, groceries, etc. Do not miss a snorkel trip to the reef, dinner at David Lau's, lunch at the little stand on the corner a block north of the square (can't remember what it's called) and a visit to Alma Libre, the local bookstore. We easily walked everywhere we wanted and met some super people. I have already recommended Casa Toucan to my relatives and plan a return trip next year with friends!

We have stayed at Casa Tucan 4 years in a row. We love the beach front location and the closeness to the center of town. My wife and I stay in the Casita and our grown children and their spouses stay in the house. The arrangements work so well for our family outings in the spring. The owner is always around and so great. He has become a friend. Our reservation arrangements have also been flawless. Cat Brown is a delight to work with and so prompt with everything. My wife and I enjoy our late evenings sitting on the patio with the sounds and breezes from the ocean. The only other sounds we usually hear are the sounds of laughter coming from the house where our grown children and their wives stay. Such a joy. We cherish our time at Casa Tucan and have booked our week for 2011.

I refrain from using the word perfect because everyone has their own opinion, but to my wife and I it is Perfect! The owner is on site during the high season and if your lucky enough to be there when he is present he will do everything possible to make your stay enjoyable. I had to send this review in response to a review I Read from Julnol very unfortunate about the timing of their arrival but glad to here they would recommend Casa Toucan!

We spent 2 weeks at Casa Toucan and could not be happier with the accommodations, location and owner was a great host! Casa Toucan is very, not secluded, but private and peaceful. The view from the balcony is exceptional! The beach is beautiful, and they keep it very clean everyday. It was fun to watch the boats come and go. Overall it was a great 2 weeks and we hope to go back next year. Thanks Casa Toucan!

We (two couples) rented the two bedroom apartment and found it to be the perfect "on the beach" spot. The orientation of each rental...ours, the one-bedroom, the pool casita, and the tower, provided for privacy but the arrangement of the units around the pool area allowed for socializing. Better than renting a house, and better than being in a cookie-cutter condo unit. Renting the entire Toucan would be perfect for a group of folks or extended family. The location is the best...half a block from the square, on the beach. The convenience to the market and the well-appointed kitchen inspired us to cook most of our meals. We usually make out of town day trips, but this trip we never ranged more than a few blocks from "home". We swam, snorkeled, read, napped, worked crossword puzzles together, cooked. We left our laptops and cell phones back in the states, and there was no tv. It was the most relaxing vacation I have ever had. Thank you for the wonderful Toucan.
